Hill Canyon: Local Park & Trails {Camarillo}

I’m often in Santa Rosa Valley, since my parents live there, but it wasn’t until recently that I discovered Hill Canyon (thanks to my mother!).

Hill Canyon is a beautiful park area offering picnic & BBQ amenities, panoramic views, bird watching, 2 equestrian riding areas, and plenty of biking & hiking trails. As you drive down Hill Canyon Road off of Santa Rosa Road, you will see a parking lot just before the bridge and fire road entrance.

If you head toward the bridge, it will take you first to some picnic tables sitting underneath the shady trees and alongside the creek. There’s also some trail maps and park info on the bulletin board located to the right. From the bridge, you will head to the Hill Canyon trail which is a single track. My mom, Luke, and I biked this trail before and had a great time. There are definitely some steep inclines, but I would say that it’s doable for most levels (and we are pretty amateur). It might take some extra determination and pedaling, but I have faith in you!

If you head down in the other direction, west before the bridge, there’s a paved fire road that takes you to the Hill Canyon Treatment plant. This is where the steep Canyon Overlook Trail is located and will lead you to the waterfall and Lizard Rock in Wildwood Park (another local favorite trail!).

Here’s my mom and our doggies enjoying the beautiful scenery from the Hill Canyon fire road.

So from the Treatment Plant/Canyon Overlook Trail, you can either head up to the waterfall (easier route, pictured below — you can see the Wildwood Park TeePee Hut at the very top), or up the switchbacks to the top section of the park known as Lizard Rock. The zig zag trail is a fun challenge for both hiking and biking (as mentioned, Luke and I are by no means experienced mountain bikers, and we made it to Wildwood Park after some hard pedaling and sweat). So, what are you waiting for!? Get out there!

The views make any blood, sweat or tears worth it, too — I promise! You can even see Ojai, Simi, Camarillo and Boney Mountain from the very top! The park is also known for bird watching, wildlife sightings and is dog-friendly – so bring someone with you (friend, family and/or your furry loved one) for a scenic outdoor workout.
