A Small Mountain Town Getaway {Idyllwild, CA}

Are you guys aware of the small mountain town nearby called Idyllwild? Because although I grew up here, I had never heard of Idyllwild until last October when my husband and I were planning our one year anniversary trip. I was scrolling through Groupon and Living Social (oh my gosh I can’t help it, but that’s another story) and I saw places like Catalina, Mammoth, Newport, Santa Barbara … then I came across Idyllwild Bed & Breakfast.

Well, I absolutely LOVE bed & breakfasts, so of course it caught my interest. I mean, they had me at “small town getaway”. I feel like the Idyllwild page was speaking to me – Come and experience the peace and quiet of Idyllwild. Smell of pines, local restaurants, hiking, get away from the traffic jams. SOLD. and it was all that, plus more.

PS Luke bought me those Hunter boots for my anniv gift and you better bet, I used every excuse to wear them (obsessed)! πŸ˜‰

cheers to one year & many more

We booked our stay at the Strawberry Creek Inn Bed & Breakfast (which I highly recommend) – and spent a weekend there. I setup a surprise private massage for Luke and I when we arrived- which he of course loved. After that, we stopped by Idyll-awhile for some delicious beer and wine- Β sat on the patio chatting, watching all the people and simply enjoying the views. Later we grabbed a bite to eat at a local deli, Gary’s Healthy Gourmet Foods. O.M.G it was so delicious!

We had such a great time exploring Idyllwild – I was pleasantly surprised by how much there was to do there! Plenty of hikes, bike trails and local shops. We hiked to Saddle Junction one day, which apparently you can take the trails all the way to Palm Springs gondola! The views were gorgeous and we even saw some snow:) Another day we biked- there’s soooo many trails to chose from, stop by The Hub Cyclery to get a trail map and tips on where to ride.

Many of the locals and guests would mention how rare it was for “LA locals” to visit Idyllwild (pshhh you mean “LA people” don’t leave LA??). Apparently, LA locals head to Big Bear and San Diego/OC locals come up to Idyllwild- never knew! It’s a such different feel than Big Bear – only mom & pap shops (warning: no Starbucks), no skiing, but tons of biking and hiking. So if you enjoy any of that, next time you’reΒ looking for a weekend getaway in a small, quiet town, I definitely recommend Idyllwild.

PS here are some of our favorite spots from our stay:

Gary’s DeliΒ – best deli around!Β I got the make-your-own-sandwich on gluten free bread with turkey, Luke got a roast beef sandwich that he absolutely looooved. They also have an assortment of glass bottled sodas and juices- I chose pumpkin pie soda – oh so fitting for an October day in the mountains:)

Idyll Awhile Wine Shop & BistroΒ – great selection of beers and wine, live music, outdoor seating, fun local hangout spot.

Cafe AromaΒ – it’s known as the “funnest and funkiest fine dining in town”. We had our anniversary dinner here and sat outside on the large patio, enjoying the fun crowds and setting. The food was divine!

Idyllwild Therapeutic MassageΒ –Β I setup a surprise private massage for Luke and I with Andrea- she actually came to us and coordinated with the Inn on which rooms to use, etc. It was so convenient, and the massage was amazing.

Higher Grounds CoffeeΒ – I think it might be the only coffee shop in Idyllwild, but boy is it delicious (and cute)! I just love coffee shops in general, but Higher Grounds is super cute, with lots of couches and seating, and they roast and brew 100% organic fair-trade coffee.

Gastrognome RestaurantΒ – This is another fun and unique spot. While we waited for a table, we sat at the old school bar and had a few drinks. The dinner was delicious too- the restaurant itself is pretty small with old fashioned interior & fireplace- makes for a romantic setting, great for a date!

Strawberry Creek InnΒ – We loved staying here. Some nights we would just hang in the lobby and play games while we drank some wine and chowed on the complimentary cookies (I mean if it’s free, why not?:). The gourmet breakfasts are to die for- Β they use organic and local produce (they have their own chicken pen on property!) and provide freshly brewed coffee and tea. They also have a complimentary, gourmet appetizer dish served at happy hour. Each room has a different theme which is fun- we stayed in the San Jacinto room- so cozy and mountainy!

Things we love: So close, yet you feel so far:) It’s the perfect escape to a quiet mountain town with plenty to do- hiking, biking, restaurants, bars, shops & more!

Have you ever been to Idyllwild? If so, what’s your favorite or “must-do” in Idyllwild?
