Best of … Ventura Harbor Village {local getaway}

Beaches, shopping, restaurants… and FREE parking?!  You know that those are hot commodities in the Southern California area, especially anywhere south of The ‘Bu.  Turn that car of yours around, and head up the PCH to Ventura Harbor Village, a quick half-hour jaunt from the Conejo Valley.

Ventura Harbor Village boasts a packed event schedule, great restaurants, and plenty to do — not to mention TWO beaches where you can round of your day of sunshine fun.Don’t worry, we’ve done the work for you.

Local Eats:

Andria’s Seafood :: There’s a reason this place has been voted Best Seafood in Ventura, 26 years in a row (which, turns out, is how long the contest has been running!).  Their clam chowder is ridiculous — and I like to think that I am a connoisseur of a good chowda.  Don’t even get me started on their fresh-battered onion rings and of course, fish ‘n chips!  These guys know what it means to serve locally-sourced food, and most of their catch ends up on your table that same day. Fresher than the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air! #amIright?!

Brophy Brothers :: This is one of our favorites, as we have been to both the Ventura and the Santa Barbara locations.  We love watching the staff shucking clams while striking up a conversation with their patrons.  They boast a fun, lively atmosphere, and this place is always bustling with a great crowd.Brophy Bros. The Greek at the Harbor :: For arguably the best gyro you’ve ever had in your Greek-food-living-LIFE, with a killer view to boot, you’re just going to have to head over here to believe me.  Happy Hour deals are pretty amazing here too {M-F, 2-7pm], but the belly dancers will keep you around until you’ve had your fill of spanikopita.

 805 Bar & Grilled Cheese :: I feel that this doesn’t even need an explanation.  Happy hour M-F 4-7pm, and keep the melted cheese dishes COMING.805 Bar & Grilled Cheese

Coastal Cone Ice Cream :: Follow your nose to find this place — the smell of fresh-baked waffle cones will lure you toward their 34+ ice cream flavors.  This place is always packed, and for good reason.Get a scoop or two [with sprinkles], and take a stroll along the harbor’s edge.  It just feels right.Coastal Cone Ice Cream at Ventura Harbor Village

Rhumb Line :: This is a great place on the water for brunch, lunch, dinner, and Happy Hour!  While it is on the other side of the harbor, it offers seating with a view for virtually every table in the house.

Local Activities:

Ventura Boat Rentals — This is THE place to go if you want to SUP (stand-up paddleboard), kayak, or rent some old-timey paddleboats (so romaaaantic).  Plus, renting a SUP is on our Summer Bucket List, so we will definitely be back here again to make sure we check that item off our list.kayak1

Island Packers :: Hey, you know those bodies of land that you can see off the coast on a clear day? [hate to break it to some of you, but that’s not Hawaii…]  The Channel Islands are waiting for you to come visit… harness your inner “Island of the Blue Dolphins” and sign up for one of their Island trips! Options range from day excursions to overnight camping trips.

My siblings and I sent our parents out on a 2-day kayaking/camping excursion with Island Packers, where they kayaked through sea caves and camped on the shores of the islands.  Pretty incredible, huh?  You can even reserve a campsite — although, this is not for the novice camper, as you have to pack in all food, water, and supplies [no general store here to pick up a corkscrew or s’mores supplies!].

Local Events:

Don’t miss the many great events hosted at the Ventura Harbor Village!  Here are some that are coming up:
