Anxious for Autumn {favorite fall festivities}

So yesterday’s drizzle, cloudy sky and slightly cooler temps got me all kinds of giddy inside. Why, you ask? Fall is almost here!

Autumn is definitely my favorite season of the year, and I am getting so excited that it’s close {FYI, September 21st is the official first day of autumn}.  Don’t get me wrong– the summers in the 805 are amazing, but autumn has my heart.  There’s just something about the cooler temperatures, boots and scarves, the changing colors of the leaves (I know, I know it’s nothing compared to the east coast or  up north, but still), and of course, the plethora of pumpkin anything — I love it all.

Here are some of my favorite fall traditions and things I’m looking forward to this coming season.

  • Pumpkin Picking: I know I may seem a little old to get excited about pumpkin picking, but sorry I’m not sorry 😉  One of our favorite local spots to pick  pumpkins (and enjoy a side of hay ride fun and  fresh produce shopping) is Underwood Farms in Moorpark.  If you haven’t been here yet, fall is a great time to visit!  They have a lot of fun harvest activities for the whole family and you can pick out that perfect pumpkin to carve.
  • local pumpkins pumkin picking2Fall Menus: I love when restaurants change up their menus according to the seasons to provide fresh local ingredients.  I’m really looking forward to dishes with butternut squash, delicata squash, brussel sprouts and acorn squash (and of course all things pumpkin, duh). That’s just one of the reasons why we love Ladyface Alehouse & Brasserie and the restaurants at the Four Seasons WV
  • Oktoberfest and Pumpkin Beer:  So I’m a little upset to be missing out on all of these this year (due to the baby growing in my belly), but I do love a good pumpkin or Oktoberfest beer.  I’m definitely interested in seeing what local breweries have to serve this year! Be sure to check out some of our faves –  Enegren, Firestone Walker, Wolf Creek and Figueroa Mountain.

  • Wine Harvests and Festivals: Sigh… another thing I will not be partaking in this year…which means, you must! Fall is harvest season for wineries and we have so many great local wineries in the 805 area! There are so many opportunities this fall to try out new wines and to support local California vineyards and wineries.  PS Santa Barbara and Paso Robles throw huge harvest festivals which you can easily make into a fun weekend getaway — check out our post here for more details!

  • All things pumpkin: As I said earlier, I love all things pumpkin-flavored. Jinky’s Cafe in TO and Agoura Hills and Side Street Cafe in NP serve amazing pumpkin pancakes (as do many breakfast cafes in the 805 area – please let us know your favorites!).  I also love all the pumpkin products at the local Trader Joe’s, Home Goods and of course the PSL at Starbucks (again, sorry I’m not sorry). I will be sure to pin some of the pumpkin recipes I try out this fall on our Pinterest page, so make sure to follow us here!
  • Fakesgiving: This has become quite the tradition amongst our friends (I mean, who wouldn’t want to eat two Thanksgiving dinners?). Our very own Nicole and her hubby host this delicious event every year in the beginning of November.  In fact, this year will be our 5th anniversary! Make sure to stay tuned for a post (or two) on some Fakesgiving hosting tips!

  • YMCA Turkey Day Dash:  This has become a fun fall tradition for each of our families! We love to get out Thanksgiving morning and run the 5k– plus, then we feel much better about all the calories we will be consuming later in the day.  Running sounds like an odd thing to be excited about, but we really have such a great time and look forward to it every year! We always run into old friends at the Turkey Dash and simply enjoy the chance to visit and spend time outside with friends and family. Our grandma even did the 5k last year – she’s still killin’ it! 🙂
