Homemade Apple Crisp with Blackberries {DIY Recipe}

The other day we had a surprise dinner for my grandma’s 80th birthday so I decided to bake a dessert. My mom had suggested making an apple crisp which I had actually never made before. Since I’m pretty indecisive, I decided to stick with the Apple Crisp idea and of course searched Pinterest for some delicious looking (and somewhat healthy;) apply crisp recipes.

Fortunately I came across Brooklyn Supper’s Gluten-free Apple Crisp with Blackberries. Not only was the dessert a hit (it was eaten all gone!), but Brooklyn’s Supper focused on local, seasonal ingredients which as you know, is a concept we love. Apple Crisps are especially great during the fall and winter seasons, and you can get the produce from your local farmers market!

Here’s my slightly modified version of the Apple Crisp with Blackberries recipe.

Filling Ingredients:

  • 7 medium assorted apples cored and cut into inch slices
  • 1 cup of blackberries
  • 1/2 cup of turbinado sugar (similar to light brown sugar, but less refined and slightly healthier!)
  • 3 tablespoons tangerine juice
  • 1 tablespoon of tangerine zest (I zested, if that’s even a word, two tangerines)
  • 2 tablespoons of coconut flour (I used Trader Joe’s Coconut Flour)
  • 1/2 teaspoon of nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon of sea salt

Topping Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cups of old-fashioned oats (you can get gluten-free or regular, I could only find regular old-fashioned Quaker Oats so that’s what I used!)
  • 1/2 cup of turbinado sugar
  • 2 tablespoons of coconut flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon of sea salt
  • 8 tablespoons of cold butter
  • cinnamon to taste

Then in a food processor, mix the oats, sugar, salt and coconut flour. Chop up the butter and process into the mixture. Pour filling mixture in baking dish and crumble the topping mixture on top – I added cinnamon as well!

Bake in the over for ~45 minutes or until the top is golden and the ingredients are bubbling. Cool and serve with ice cream, whip cream or by it’s self!

DIY Baking Apple Crisp - LocalLove805I’ll be honest, my Apple Crisp was a hit. Pretty proud of myself;) Grandma loved it too and she enjoyed her birthday party.
