Locally Roasted: Beacon Coffee Co. {Ventura}

Have you ever heard of a cupping class? We’re true coffee fanatics at LocalLove805, but we’ll be honest — we hadn’t heard of one until last week. So, as you can imagine, we weren’t sure what to expect when we signed up for the New Crop Cupping Class at Beacon Coffee Co. in Ventura.

Beacon Coffee Co

We were thrilled as soon as we discovered this local coffee shop.  They not only purchase their coffee directly from small producers and single estate coffee farmers and then roasts it here in Ventura, but they also travel to each country to personally visit the coffee farm community! They have fostered and grown symbiotic relationships with the coffee plantations, and take a personal interest in enhancing the lives and fortitude of the coffee farmers themselves.

Plus, their motto: Responsibly Sourced, Thoughtfully Roasted. We are all over that.

And as soon as we heard about the New Crop Cupping Class on Saturday, we immediately reached out to the owners, Jennifer and John, to reserve our spot. The first class was already booked, but we snagged a spot in the 12pm class.  We skipped our morning coffee and came ready for a serious caffeine boost.  Little did we know how much we would learn about coffee farming, roasting, brewing, and tasting techniques!

Beacon Coffee Co. is located in an industrial area in Ventura, and Jennifer explained that the coffee shop is key for all the businesses surrounding it. They have frequent locals, as well as new visitors like ourselves (but we will definitely be back again soon). Nicole and I were fortunate enough to get a tour of Beacon Coffee Co. and to learn all about Jennifer and John’s experience that led them to opening Beacon Coffee Co., along with their great existing relationships with the coffee farmers. It was really inspiring to hear how connected they are to their farmers (they have photos of the farms and communities up on their walls) and how passionate they are about their coffee-making endeavors.

This cupping class in particular was to taste the new 2013/14 coffees that had just started to arrive (apparently it’s coffee harvest season!). We tried the brand new Ethiopia roast next to the new private reserve Amarillo Honey from Costa Rica — which were both delicious, and yet had very diverse tasting notes. John lead the class, and discussed each coffee’s growing region, farming practices, processes, and how it all effects the taste of the cup. We learned so much in this class that it’d be hard to write it all down, but the theme that stood out most to me was how passionate John and Jennifer are about the farming process, their relationships with the farmers, and the quality of Beacon’s coffee.
