So, spoiler alert – Luke and I moved into our home in the beginning of March. I know, I’m a horrible person for not keeping you all updated! Sorry. We’ve been so busy moving, decorating and finishing things like the outside fence, laundry room cabinets, laundry chute and more.
We were told “you’re never actually done with your house” and I now realize (and believe) that statement. But it’s okay (!!), because it’s exciting to keep adding new features and decorate. I love it 🙂
Oh, and did I mention that we still have no TV or internet??? Yup, that’s right. Over a month with no media… thanks …
Hardware. Lighting Fixtures. Again, not as easy as you’d think. I know, I’ve said that a lot during this whole process. And it’s true.
There’s just too many options and when you have a budget, you always tend to like the ones that are just a little bit too expensive. We ended up getting a lot of our lighting fixtures online and from Lowe’s – which had great prices. Our dining room chandelier from Ballard Designs and our kitchen pennants from Grandin Road (we actually bought these both before we even started the house!).
My husband Brett turned 32 in January (??!), and for the second year in a row, our plans for FootGolf got rained out — boo! C’mon, when does it ever rain here?!
With the stormy forecast looming in the near distance, I knew we had to switch horses — and fast. With 4 days to spare, we created a birthday bash from two of Brett’s favorite things: beer + bourbon.
Here are some of our favorite details that we incorporated to pull the theme together:
Beer Blind Taste Testing
It’s simple: go to your local liquor mega-store (like Total Wines or BevMo), and pick out 6 different six-packs …
One of the things that I love about my mother-in-law is that she is the best garage sale shopper. She always finds the coolest pieces that have good bones, and knows the difference between a great find and a piece of you-know-what. When we moved into our first home two years ago, she brought down a slew of amazing pieces to help decorate the empty spaces that come when moving from a 1-bedroom apartment to a 4-bedroom house.
One of my favorite items was this mirror, which has graced my mantle for the past year and a half. It’s a great mirror, but it was ready for an update.
The cabinets boxes are in (!!), and the paint… ohhh the paint. We were told that picking out paint colors is really difficult, so we did a ton of research online (hello, Pinterest and Houzz) and thought we had it in the bag. No need to buy samples and try it out beforehand.
Well, the next day we came in just a bit after our painter had started and we immediately had to stop him. Our main “greige” color looked more like a powder blue and the “navy blue” powder bath looked way too bright. #gofigure #itoldyaso
So Luke and I then stopped everything we were doing and drove down to the Sherwin Williams store in Thousand Oaks, picked out more …
A lot has happened at our home. Things have been moving quickly and I’ve fallen a bit behind (sorry!), especially with the holidays. First major update, the exterior stone veneer is done! Second update, doors are in! We picked the three panel doors to compliment the craftsman style, but also because some of our doors seem very narrow and tall so this style looked the best (we have taller than average doors, 8 ft).
We also picked our trim which …
I’m a bit overdue, sorry guys! So much has happened too. Don’t worry, we are not keeping our house two-toned though;) That yellow color is the way the hardie board comes and the greenish grey is the color we will be painting our house! You like it!? You better! 😉 We are super pleased with the way the color turned out, can’t wait for them to paint the whole house. They had to stop mid-way through because there were too many workers – so we had to get the stone veneer up and roof done first.
Things I learned this Fakesgiving:
I can fit 80 people (and 10 children under the age of 4!) in my backyard, Three turkeys are juuuuust barely enough to feed a small army, Egg nog + Kahlua is a very tasty and satisfying treat to wind down at the end of a successful party, and Fakesgiving has become bigger than I ever even imagined.
I’m still processing everything from last Saturday’s 6th Annual Fakesgiving festivities, but if I were to sum it up in one word, it would be: AWESOME. Here’s a photo recap of how it all went down.
**But first, I need to give a special LL805 …
Thank you Jeannine’s Gourmet Food Hall for this amazing pun — talk about a pick-me-up! 🙂 It’s FRIDAY, which means you are one. step. closer. to the freakin’ weekend. Let’s talk Five Friday Faves, shall we?

1. Did anyone catch Britney Spears’ Instagram posts of her hiking in Malibu Creek State Park?? No need for a geotag, Ms. Spears — we’d recognize that beautiful background any day of the week 🙂
