As most of you know, our very own Nicole Schussel is pregnant with her first baby — baby Graham! I had the honor of hosting her baby shower, along with her sister-in-law, mom, and mother-in-law, at our new home this past weekend. I’ll be honest, the planning process was a bit stressful at times, but what isn’t these days, right?? It was more enjoyable and exciting than anything though. Especially all the crafting!
To begin planning, we got the guest list and found our invites. We chose a vintage airplane travel theme to go along with their nursery’s theme. We found a ton of adorable vintage airplane baby shower invites on Etsy and we finally narrowed it down to this one by SweetPapermint. We also ordered matching “Thank You” tags for favors and “Well Wishes” for Nicole to keep. Once the invites were out, we started a google doc and Pinterest board. #duh
We found a TON of ideas for a vintage airplane/travel party. Pinterest can be a bit overwhelming at times (hello, wedding flashbacks), so you really need to know when to stop. [Which I seriously struggle with — luckily, my sisters aren’t afraid to tell me what’s up ;)]
The second struggle I came across was having the decor turn out too patriotic with the red and blue colors. To avoid that, I ended up using grey and navy blue as the main colors and kept kraft paper tan and vintage red as the accents.
We got the paper goods (paper plates and napkins) from Party City in Newbury Park. It seemed that Party City had the best pricing for the original striped paper straws in bulk, although I already had a lot of grey striped ones so I grabbed a couple little packages from Target’s Dollar Spot (above). You can also find striped straws at Home Goods, Amazon and more specialty designs on Etsy.PS if you don’t know this already, bakers twine is your best friend. LOVE it. And you know what else, Target’s Dollar Spot. #duh
I got the fabric for our tablecloths and runners from Joann’s, and I got the paper goods for banners and signs from Joann’s and Michael’s. I was having difficulty figuring out the colors because the maps were mostly pink and I wanted it a bit more boy-ish for Graham.
That’s when I went back to the store and bought some navy blue and grey paper… and VOILÁ! That did the trick! 🙂
Once I figured out the colors and laid out the banners, I started crafting.I found some old wooden frames (from our wedding actually) and painted them grey along with the letter “G”, which I bought from Joann’s. I used map post cards and wrote fun signs on them. My mom and sisters donated a few frames for the cause too 🙂Here’s a look at the banners I made. Letters are from Target Dollar Spot. Paper and twine is from Joann’s. Airplane stickers are from Michael’s.
PS I’ll share final pics from the shower soon! Stay tuned!
