{How To} Get a Green Thumb for Free

One of the things that we inherited upon becoming new homeowners was a 4’x4’ garden box in our backyard.  It had some herbs in there, but it was starting to look like a weedy jungle of nonsense.

I had grandiose plans to expand the garden box and grow some food, but quickly realized I had no idea what I was doing.  To make matters worse, we had a serious bunny problem – I almost went all Mr. McGregor on them (Peter Rabbit reference?  No?  Okay.)

Enter: Armstrong Garden Center.

Yeah, they’re a national chain, but the Armstrong Garden Center in Thousand Oaks is a wonderful community resource that you might not know about.

Most Saturday or Sunday mornings at 9am (ever seen the world at that time?), FREE gardening classes are offered on a variety of topics.  The first class we checked out was on growing tomatoes – and we soon realized that we had been doing every. single. thing. wrong.

They told you exactly what supplies were needed, with zero pressure to buy anything.

As you can tell, I didn’t need any pressure at all to make my purchases.

In fact, we got so excited that we added another garden box and planted even more veggies!  Currently, we have eggplant, cabbage, strawberries, chard, lettuce, leeks, Brussels sprouts, sage, rosemary, chocolate mint, green apple mint, garlic chives, thyme, cherry tomatoes, and heirloom tomatoes.  PHEW.  Obviously, we are a little obsessed.

This was our garden last spring — it has grown so much since then!  Which makes my stomach very happy.

Interested?? Check out the next upcoming class here.

Here’s a glance at some of the upcoming classes!  I’m excited about these because the best things to grow are, in my opinion, things I can EAT.
