Home Remodeling on a Budget: Tips & Tricks {DIY Home}

We are still in the midst of remodeling our home and have now come to terms with the fact that we might not be in there by the time our little girl is born. But you know that’s ok, one thing we’ve learned about remodeling a home is that it never really goes according to schedule…whatever you think the timeline is, add another couple weeks…or more like another month 🙂 Which brings me to the tips and tricks of remodeling that I have learned thus far…

1. Make a schedule (but make sure it’s flexible)

  • My husband made this really awesome spreadsheet schedule on excel so that he could keep on top of what projects/workers were going to be in our home and what he could do to make sure things moved as quickly and efficiently as possible.
  • It also helped give him a little leverage to say when a certain project needed to be done so the next guy could start on time <<and you need all the leverage you can get!

2. Ask for recommendations from friends/family/neighbors and get several bids

  • Luckily my brother and sister-in-law started their own remodel right before us so we were able to get a lot of recommendations from them on who (and who not) to use.
  • By getting several bids from different companies, you are able to better negotiate. And let me tell you, negotiate away! I always feel bad negotiating and I’m not so good at it, but when it comes to home remodeling, it’s really all part of the process.   And it seems like companies almost expect it so don’t be that person who doesn’t even ask! It’s so important and will help you save money– which of course, we are all about.

3. Pinterest is awesome (like I needed to tell you that!)

  • Pinterest has taken over my free time– it truly has become an addiction.  But a good addiction I guess because I have been able to find so many ideas for my own home.  It’s a great way to get some inspiration not only for when you are remodeling, but also for when you are decorating {definitely not my strong suit, but thanks to pinterest I can fake it} or looking for new ways to update your home.
  • Pinterest can really help you save money too!  There are so many ideas for DIY projects with detailed how-to instructions, ways to make cheaper furniture look high-end (i.e. ikea!), as well as my favorite, the Pottery Barn and Restoration Hardware hacks for those of us who can’t spend $120 on a throw pillow.

4. Do your own clean up

  • So this is the not so glamorous part of remodeling…but then again nothing about home remodeling is glamorous unless you have endless amounts of cash, which let’s be honest, most of us don’t.  Taking the time to do your own clean up every few days/weeks will really will help you save money simply because you don’t have to pay for someone else to do it. Easy as that!
  • My hubby and I went over there the other day and spent the whole afternoon sweeping, cleaning up, and getting rid of all of the trash (ok fine, since I am 7 months pregnant I may have done more observing than actually doing, but I like to consider myself an excellent encourager and motivator ;).  We (ahem, I mean he) got a lot done and it felt good actually doing some hard work on our own and taking care of our home even when it is mostly just framed walls and concrete floors.

5. Show your workers that you appreciate them

  • Let’s be honest, we’ve all been there… no one wants to work for a under-appreciative boss. Plus, they’ll be so grateful for a kind gesture and better yet, they will most likely be even more inclined to work harder for you (which is always a plus). We brought over cold beverages on one of those really hot days we were having in the 805 as a little token of appreciation for all their hard work, and once it starts to cool down a bit I plan on baking some treats as well (who doesn’t love a yummy baked good?!).

So that’s just a few of our tips and tricks that we’ve learned so far during the process.

PS I also highly recommend marrying a handy husband like I did! Haha! But if not, don’t forget you can enlist handy friends and family members, which we have also done throughout the process.

I would love to hear if any of you have your own insider tips on home remodeling on a budget …please share and let us know! #spreadthelove #DIYhome #onabudget
