In case you haven’t noticed, we have some amazing new products in the Local Love 805 Marketplace right now! Lately, we’ve been especially drooling over these gorgeous pillows and wall hangings from Beautiful Threads Co., which is run by 805 native, entrepreneur, and creative badass, Sarah De Los Cobos!
We spent some time catching up with her, chatting about how she started into mastering her craft, and having her spill the details on her fave things about the 805. And, if you feel so inspired, head here to shop her adorable products!
I’m Sarah, a fiber artist, and coffee enthusiast! I started Beautiful Threads Co in 2017, shortly after trying macramé for the first time. All it took was one workshop (by Jessica of Homemade Ventura) and I was hooked. After I dove into the macramé world for a bit, I decided to explore other mediums and ended up learning how to weave on a loom and embroider by hand. Right now, weaving is my main love. My dad even makes all of my looms!
I turned to creativity in adulthood as a way of healing and exploring myself. I was actually a very creative child, and just let that part of me get lost as I got older and more “serious.” Now, I am learning that there are so many more career and life paths than I thought were possible for me. Letting go of expectations allows me to do more and have more fun. I definitely desire for people to feel that spirit of joy through what I create.
I think appreciating every step of the process is really important when you own a business. I have lots of curiosity and a low budget, so I am very devoted to teaching myself what I need to know in order to make awesome products. It can be a struggle, but I am trying to be intentional about owning my talents and using them for good. I hope people who follow along with me find encouragement to pursue something that scares them.
What is one of your favorite things about living in the 805?
Almost everything is at our fingertips here in Ventura County. The city, the beach, the mountains… just about any activity is within reach here. I’m a total homebody, but I love a good adventure, and there’s so much to explore in southern California. My favorite outings usually end with food!
What is one of your favorite spots or things to do in your hometown?
I find it incredibly freeing to drive through the canyon to Malibu and down the PCH. Windows down, music loud! The experience is kind of a safety blanket for me.
And for anyone visiting your 805 hometown, where MUST they go?
You’ve got to go enjoy some Mexican food. 3 Amigos serves the BEST burritos — I eat there way too often. Also, you cannot beat Patron’s for their chips and salsa — it’s my favorite part of eating out! Plus, their bartender serves up delicious margaritas. Being of a Hispanic background myself, my favorite restaurants are simple and let the food speak itself. Patron’s does that so well.
Do you have a favorite coffee shop, winery, restaurant in the 805?
As a former barista, I am a craft coffee fanatic. The coffee scene is growing out here! Head to Ragamuffin Coffee Roasters in Newbury Park or Oxnard for a lavender honey latte with homemade syrup – it’s divine! I also drive out to support Prospect Roasters and Palm & Boy out in Ventura whenever I can.
Thanks for checking out another incredible entrepreneur + local artist! And like we always say… when you make a purchase from a small local business, a REAL PERSON does a little happy dance! Shop Beautiful Threads Co on our Local Love 805 Marketplace, and shop small 🙂
