Nike Training Club + Run Club {& a free app!}

When I first moved to Santa Monica a couple years back, I was hard-pressed to find a replacement for my favorite neighborhood gym that I left back in the 805.  Most workouts that I was interested in were costing anywhere from $25-$40… per class.  After a few months, I had pretty much exhausted all of the available Groupon deals in the area, and the YMCA classes were just not cutting it for me anymore.

I checked Meetup.com [great resource!] and found something called Nike Training Club.  The big things that grabbed my attention were the words “workout” and “FREE.”  I had a feeling that there had to be a catch, like I would be given an aggressive sales pitch every week or something.  I met down at the Nike store in Santa Monica Place (which meets every Monday at 7:03 [bonus points for punctuality??], alternating between Santa Monica and West LA), and met about 40 others who were hoping to snag a decent workout without forking over any cash — just like me.

Little did I know, I was about to get WORKED. {and bonus: there was no aggressive sales pitch}

This high-intensity interval training (HIIT) workout was chock-full of sit ups, partner drills, squats, jumps, and, unfortunately, burpees.  It was 60 minutes of pure insanity, with the motto of “WE DON’T STOP” ringing through your head.  And for the next few days, I was definitely not walking sexy.

As the weeks went on, the group got bigger and bigger.  During the workout, I always thought to myself, “Why did I choose to do this?!” But, for some reason, I couldn’t wait to go back every week.  Don’t even get me started on the crazy beach workouts…

After every workout, a treasured MVP award (+ free t-shirt!) is given out to a guy and a girl that worked it during that NTC sesh – and I am proud to say that one special week, they decided to award it to two ladies, instead.  Do they look familiar??!

Quick note: Nike gives away a TON of free stuff.  Last January, Nike hosted NTC Week, an entire week of 2-a-day workouts, giving out free shirts, breakfast, yoga mats… and we even scored a pair of these sweet studio wrappers for barre classes!

We trialed the new Nike FuelBands, got some great workouts, and had a lot of fun getting to know others in our community.  Oh, and of course, it was all FREE.  Sadly, they didn’t do it again this year, but fingers crossed for next year?!

Even though I’ve moved from the area, I still work on the west side – so I get the opportunity to hit up NTC on my way home every once in a while.  But, on the other days of the week, I use this handy app to get NTC fit:

As you can see, you can adapt your workout based on how much time you’ve got, your overall fitness level, and what kind of area you want to target.  One of my favorite cardio workouts is The Heartthrob:

Some workouts, like this one, require light weights or a medicine ball – but many don’t require any equipment, and can be completed in the comfort of your own living room!

Hope you enjoy this as much as we have – and, if you can make it on Monday nights at 7:03pm, we will see you at Nike Training Club West!  Check nike.com/LA to reserve your spot AND to find out the location, which alternates weekly.

Not into the HIIT stuff as much?  They’ve got some great run club action happening, all over Southern California!  Here are some of the upcoming events that piqued our interest:

  • Long Run [6 or 10 miles] with music and snacks! {Sat., March 21 @8:03am, Santa Monica}
  • Ready Set Go Run [“intro to running” format, short distance] with a Run Analysis! {Sun., March 22 @9:03am, Santa Monica}
  • Speed Run [tempo runs + hill repeats] {Tues., March 24 @7:03pm, Santa Monica}
  • N+TC Tour Los Angeles [BIG event with tons of training challenges and fun!] $50 registration fee {Sat., April 25}

As most of these are on the weekends, they’re totally accessible to our more Northern-flung readers — just hop on the PCH and voila! You’ll be sweating in no time 😉

spread the love, feel the burn, save the cash.

xx, Nicole {LL805}
