The Most Special Event of the Year [#LA2015]

Interested in taking part in the biggest event to take place in Los Angeles since the 1984 Olympic Games, and the largest sports and humanitarian event to take place in the world in 2015?? KNEW IT.

The Special Olympics World Games are being held in Los Angeles this year, which is a BFD for many reasons.  165 countries, 500,000 spectators, 30,000 volunteers, and 6,500 athletes will be gathering in our backyard to compete in 25 events.

Through the power of sport, Special Olympics empowers people with intellectual disabilities to become accepted and valued members of their communities, leading to a more respectful and inclusive society for all.  I mean, who doesn’t want to be a part of that?!

I am a team captain for a program called Fans in the Stands, a volunteer program that pretty much helps fill the stands with spectators in order to cheer on participants!

As a Speech-Language Pathologist, I get the privilege of working with people with intellectual disabilities on a daily basis.  I can guarantee that you will learn so much more from them than you will ever be able to comprehend, and this is your opportunity to experience it firsthand — what are you waiting for?

Events are held at locations across southern California, and you can find the full schedule here.  Pick your favorite event [admission is FREE!] –and I dare you not to shed a tear or feel ridiculously inspired.  We will be attending Rhythmic Gymnastics at UCLA’s Wooden Center [I know, right?!].

Which event will you be attending?
