Homemade Apple Crisp with Blackberries {DIY Recipe}

The other day we had a surprise dinner for my grandma’s 80th birthday so I decided to bake a dessert. My mom had suggested making an apple crisp which I had actually never made before. Since I’m pretty indecisive, I decided to stick with the Apple Crisp idea and of course searched Pinterest for some delicious looking (and somewhat healthy;) apply crisp recipes.

Fortunately I came across Brooklyn Supper’s Gluten-free Apple Crisp with Blackberries. Not only was the dessert a hit (it was eaten all gone!), but Brooklyn’s Supper focused on local, seasonal ingredients which as you know, is a concept we …

Kale Apple Ginger Smoothie {DIY Recipes}

Since this wonderful heat wave (is it over yet?), I’ve been inspired to try more smoothie recipes. I checked out our kitchen and found kale, apples and bananas – then I Googled and found this recipe from Culinary Colleen.

I modified the recipe quite a bit since I was missing some ingredients- cucumber and lemon – and instead I added banana, juice and broccoli to the smoothie. Don’t let the broccoli scare you –  not only does it contain a TON of nutrients (calcium, iron, fiber, potassium, zinc, magnesium and phosphorous), but it also adds texture to the smoothie. Broccoli has amazing antioxidant benefits and about twice the daily recommended amount of vitamin C …

Jump start your day – Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana Smoothie {DIY recipe}

It’s a Monday morning, and after a weekend of indulging, sometimes you just need that extra health boost to start your day, err week. 😉

A few years ago, my husband had to take a nutrition course during his graduate work toward becoming a Family Nurse Practitioner.  So, he comes home one day and tells me that a) we aren’t getting nearly enough fruit in our diet, and b) we need to start our day with a more protein-packed breakfast.

So, wanting to sound like a totally clued-in wife, I said, “Um, I totally knew that… I was already on my way to the grocery store to get more …
