Wanderlust Work-It-Wednesday {no excuses}

If I were to put a figure to it, I would say approximately 60-70{fd7f0a6624fbd2224f3c60e3404acbd2207eb416c38268e7e97265ebe361b912} of my vacation planning involves thinking about what kind of food I’m going to eat.  No, seriously.  When we went to N’Awlins last April, I literally had a checklist. #notkidding

It is so fun to splurge on vacation — but, you can still balance fitness on the road, too!  In fact, this is one of our most favorite travel tips to make you feel like a ‘local’: work it out.

Seriously!  Going on a run allows you to see neighborhoods and landmarks you might not have seen otherwise.  Ducking into a cycling or yoga class in another town (or country!) makes for a fun, authentic experience, where you can meet people and get a feel for their daily life.  Here are some of our favorite ways to work in a little exercise on vacation — remember, no excuses! (And yes, you can have that extra scoop of gelato).

Make a Splash

Rent a kayak or a stand-up paddle board, and beat the heat by getting out on the water!  You will glimpse some gorgeous scenery, and maybe even some river/lake/sea life as well.

Take a Class

There is nothing like taking a yoga class in a foreign country to make you feel like a local! [p.s., in case you were wondering, Namaste is the same in pretty much every language 😉 ]  After I was done with this awesome class in Guatemala, I rehydrated with a little bit of local coconut water — doesn’t get much fresher than that, ladies and gents!

Search TravelZoo, LivingSocial, or Groupon for some great deals on classes wherever you’ll be traveling!  Cycling, barre, yoga, Pilates, or even something a little out of your comfort zone, like hula hooping or trampoline — c’mon, you’re never going to see these people again!

Hit the Road

Trails, sidewalks, parks — you can run pretty much anywhere {just, please — don’t run in sketchy areas, or after dark by yourself!  Use the buddy system!}. Hayley was recently in NYC for a week-long work trip, and although she had access to the hotel gym, she wanted to also experience the city a bit more… so she took the subway to Central Park for a beautiful morning run.

There’s nothing quite like the satisfaction of passing another runner, giving them the ‘head nod’ like you live there, and burning a few cals 😉

Take a Hike

The view from the top is always the best, and it’s worth the effort getting there!  Check TripAdvisor for some worthwhile hikes at your next destination.

Tip: you get an extra burn when you hike at higher elevations, so take advantage of it when you get the chance! 😉

Tour de Vacay

Renting bikes is a great way to cover lots of ground while seeing the sights — and is often much cheaper than taking a taxi all over the place.  Plus, who doesn’t love a good bike ride?!

Players Gonna Play

How fun are lawn games?  True, some require a little more endurance than others (I’m lookin’ at you, Cornhole)… but playing your favorite game with a friend is an entertaining (read: hilarious) way to break a sweat.  Our husbands are really into Spikeball right now, and we also love a rousing game of paddle ball on the beach.  Volleyball, touch football, catch, and frisbee are all fair game, as well.
